Boy, have I been around...

It shouldn't come as a surprise that during these years I had to be doing some other stuff.

And so I have...

You can find more info in this kind of long section about my previous work experience and also a few hobbies I try to have when time allows it. For extra-curricular activities check the Bio page.

Pet Projects

Every once in a while a hobby grows and evolves so much it becomes more of a project that something you only do when you happen to remeber about it.

1994-1997

It was still the dawn of the internet in Portugal. Private costumers still had no access and the few geeks that dreamt with computer communications connected themselves to BBSs. Some became System Operators (Sysops) and I was one of them. Operated one of the few BBS systems in Porto and was a leaf of FidoNet. Also belonged to an international workgroup on Fidonet Mail/News Exchange Rules (EchoPol). Then, the internet started to take over and it was time to move on.

2004-2007

Around 2004 I got introduced to the concept of Personal Mobile Radio. Think about the Walkie-Talkies from your childhood, multiply their range up to several Km, and that's basically it. Before free call plans from mobile operators like Moche, Tag or Extravaganza, it was the ideal way for a group of friends camping or in car travelling to communicate without expenses. It's still a nifty idea for places without mobile phone network. Free call plans have, however, killed most of the interest of Personal Mobile Radio. The site is now static and both the online shop and forums have been taken offline.

2005- ...

Being a long time music fan and also a geek, it would be more than normal that the joining of both would make me a Hi-Fi equipment fan.
In 2005 two friends challenged me to create the first Portuguese Hi-Fi forum. Everybody said the national market was too small and were doomed from the start. Not only were we successful, as there are 3 other forums nowadays. Forumhifi is still (by large numbers) the bigger and best of all of them.
The forum became a reference site for consumers and sellers and an influencial voice on the market. It's present in several Audio Events and Fairs and supports the organization of some of the best events made in Portugal.
The size of the community and the site's events and activities became so time-consuming that we had to pass the forum into new hands in early 2010. But the bug bits hard when you have a passion for it and you can't stay away for too long, so two of us were back at the helm after a few months. We're still trying to understand why...

Hobbies

Both present and past...

Music

It's my main hobby. Difficult to imagine life without music for me. My musical tastes are, let's say... extense. It's a bit difficult to find the space to store it all. I have a music server, but I just love shiny new CDs, there's nothing quite like it. If you want to take a peek at my CD collection, you're welcome.

Movies

I'd really like to have more time. I seldomly go to the movies these days. And my DVD collection is gathering a lot more dust than I'd like.

Kendo

Kendo is a very interesting martial art. I practiced it for a short period around 2003 or something that, and been wanting to get back ever since. I have to get back in shape before though. Do get more info.

Farming

My grandparents had farms and I went there a lot as a kid. I still go there several weekends around the year. Harvest and planting seasons are mandatory. Body tends to complaint a lot afterwards though.

Writing

Every once in a while I get asked to write some articles to magazines and newspapers (like Bits & Bytes from Jornal de Notícias) on several Communications or IT topics. It's quite fun, actually.

Airplanes

Enthusiast about airplane communications and engineering. Both Civil and Military. The habit of looking up to identify passing airplanes granted me the nickname "Skywatcher" while in highschool.

Traveling

Well, if it's not a hobby, it should be. I've covered about half the countries of Europe and can't wait the have the time to start travelling again.

Poker

Worst... Player... Ever.
